SOUTHERN
CARIBBEAN PORTS
SAN
JUAN, PUERTO RICO
San Juan is traditionally known
as the starting place for the Southern
Caribbean cruises. Several ships
do now sail on longer (10,11, 14
nt.) cruises that originate in
Florida --- the majority of all
7 nt. cruises to the Southern Caribbean
do begin in San Juan. The ships
berth right in the downtown area,
near the Old Town area, casinos,
great shops and restaurants. Distinctively
Spanish in flavor, San Juan is
an intriguing blend of old and
new. You'll be drawn to the open
air markets and authentic Spanish
restaurants that share the city
with lively, modern casinos. Fort
El Morro once protected the city,
and now offers a commanding view
of the charming old section. For
those who can do so, plan to go
at least one day early to enjoy
overnighting in this lively city.
Beach front hotels and wonderful
golf courses are readily available.
ST. THOMAS
This beautiful tropical island
shows up on the itinerary of almost
every ship sailing with both an
Eastern Caribbean and Southern
Caribbean cruise. The Virgin Islands
are the tropical jewels of the
United States, with St. Thomas
as the centerpiece. Here you will
encounter a profusion of flower
and miles of beaches just outside
of shops catering to travelers
in search of some of the best bargains
in the Caribbean. Many couples
choose this picturesque island
for a wedding in one of the hillside
chapels or gazebos that overlook
the deep blue Caribbean, or on
the beach, barefoot and in swimsuits.
Either way --- its sure to make
for a wedding that will never be
forgotten by all who attend it.
For those avid cruisers who have
visited this island frequently,
many choose to take the short water
taxi ride over to St. John's island
for the day.
ST. JOHN ISLAND, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
(Not to be confused with St. John's,
Antigua)
Beautiful St. John is the smallest
of the three U.S. Virgin Islands.
It covers an area of only 28 square
miles, two-thirds of which is devoted
to the Virgin Islands National
Park. Although the history of the
island is long and interesting,
the features that make St. John
so special are its magnificent
beaches and its underwater snorkel
trail. Hiking through the rainforests
ranks high with many nature lovers.
ST. MAARTEN
There is a unique combination of
Dutch and French here that resolves
itself nicely in streets adorned
with flowers and superb island
cuisine. Hand painted signs in
both languages invite you to become
familiar with this delightful territory,
shared by two sovereign states.
St. Maarten is the smallest land
divided by two countries in the
world. The French atmosphere is
punctuated with quaint buildings
and sidewalk cafes. On the Dutch
side there are flower lined streets
and lovely courtyards. There you
can also wager a bet at the casino
or dance the night way. Both sides
of the island have miles and miles
of white beaches, perfect for swimming,
snorkeling, day and night scuba
diving, parasailing or just sunning.
For the adventuresome --- there
is even a well-known "clothing
optional" beach. Shoppers have
a great choice of shops to choose
from featuring some of the best
prices in the Caribbean ---- jewelry,
clothing, cameras, electronic equipment,
hand embroidery linens, and of
course, local crafts.
MARTINIQUE
This island has been aptly described
as paradise with a distinctive
French accent. Martinique offers
you delicious Creole cooking,
and true to its heritage ---
you'll find the finest fashions
from Paris, exotic perfumes,
plus fine china and crystal.
The island is covered with
rolling green hills and ringed
by perfect white sand beaches.
Mt. Pelee rises majestically
in the background.
BARBADOS
The easternmost of the Caribbean
islands, Barbados is also one of
the most beautiful. It is another
of the British influenced islands,
and it retains the Empire's customs
of afternoon tea, cricket and polo
matches. You can stroll through
the outdoor straw market or Trafalgar
Square. The rum-runner cruises
out to great snorkeling beaches
are one of the favorites for many
--- or a visit to the Flower Forest
makes for a beautiful day as well
--- not to mention just soaking
up the sun on one of the many beautiful
beaches.
ARUBA
On this delightedly little Dutch
island you will find friendly people
and some of the best white sand
beaches in the Caribbean. There
are lively casinos, excellent restaurants,
and the Port of Call marketplace.
Don't miss Aruba's fascinating
countryside, dotted with cactus
jungles, secluded coves and divi-divi
trees bent in the direction of
the nearly constant trade winds.
GUADELOUPE
The French island of Guadeloupe
has two land masses joined by a
drawbridge and dominated by a volcano,
pristine beaches and sugarcane
fields. There is an 18th century
fortress, and bargains on French
goods along Rue Frebault. An open-air
spice market offers great prices
in exotic spices --- or you want
to sample French wines or some
of the local Creole cuisine.
GRENADA
Unlike the sister islands of the
Caribbean, Grenada is not dependent
on tourism; it produces one fourth
of the world's supply of nutmeg
and mace as well as an abundance
of cinnamon, saffron and cloves.
This true spice island is one of
the most lush, with dense tropical
rain forests and green hills and
valleys. The town of St. George
nestles around a natural harbor
and holds the French, West Indian
and English cultures in a pleasant
balance. An outstanding treat offered
here is their famous nutmeg ice
cream.
ST. CROIX
In addition to its lovely beaches,
shops, water sports and restaurants,
St. Croix offers a great deal of
natural beauty to explore. Tour
the island's rain forest, botanical
gardens, wild-life refuges, nature
preserves and parks, including
the only underwater park run by
the US National Park Service.
ST. KITTS
Authentic Caribbean foods and a
peaceful setting virtually untouched
by tourism are among St. Kitts
most enchanting features. Breathtaking
views are offered from Brimstone
Hill Fort, atop Mt. Liamuigo ---
one of the wonders of the Caribbean.
Hiking and biking are popular modes
of travel for exploring this well-preserved
tropical island. Venture into the
hills for magnificent scenery or
walk along the miles of beaches,
searching for your perfect spot
or a seashell, a treasure carried
in from the sea.
ST. LUCIA
St. Lucia is dotted with swaying
palms, and blessed with warm, turquoise
waters that are perfect for swimming.
Stroll through the lovely shops
in the Port Seraphine area of the
Castries; or take a tour to Soufriere's "drive-in"
volcano, on to the famous Diamond
Mineral Baths and waterfall, set
in one of the most beautiful gardens
in the world. Rising dramatically
from the sea, the twin Piton peaks
have served as beacons to sailors
for centuries and give St. Lucia
a South Pacific atmosphere. Take
a coastal drive beneath these 3,000
ft. wonders and stop to walk on
palm-fringed beaches created by
volcanic activity. There are fine
restaurants in the lush hills above
Castries where the views of the
island and sea are breathtaking.
BONAIRE
The Least populated of the Netherlands
Antilles islands off the coast
of Venezuela, Bonaire is a place
to enjoy water sports and observe
nature. You will see thousands
of tropical birds, including parrots
and pink flamingos. Clear waters
around the pink-coral reef island
make it a superb diving spot.
ISLA MARGARITA, VENEZUELA
Once famed for pearls and pirates,
this island just 23 miles off the
mainland is now better known s
a popular resort. Porlamar, the
duty-free port and tourist center,
is home to a number of elegant
European shops. Those with an interest
in the environment will want to
visit La Restlanga National Park,
where the bayous teem with unusual
flowers and exotic birds.
ST. JOHN'S,. ANTIGUA
(Not to be confused with St. John,
US Virgin Islands)
A British Leeward Island, the capital
city of St. John's is a quaint
little city with much to see and
some nice shopping bargains as
well. The island boasts more than
300 beaches, the English Harbour
where Admiral Lord Nelson once
ruled the British Fleet, many quaint
shops, restaurants and a museum.
DOMINICA
Situated between the island of
Montserrat and Martinique, Dominica
is often overshadowed by its jet
set neighbors. This has been a
blessing to tourists, but a bane
to the local officials who realized
that in the wake of the last hurricane,
the exportation of bananas was
a somewhat fickle source of revenue.
Limited shopping is available primarily
from street type kiosks. But a
must-see for this island is the
rain forest. Best bet on getting
there is with a private taxi ---
in order to make the climb to the
waterfalls. (Cruise line tours
will take you to an overlook above
the falls.) Definitely not recommended
for older or less active people.
Good walking shoes and an umbrella
are recommended.
